2015 is the 350th anniversary of the birth of the academic journal: the “Journal des scavans” in France and the Royal Society of London’s “Philosophical Transactions” both began publishing in 1665. This is as good a time as any to celebrate the enormous positive contribution made by the academic journal to scholarly communications – but also to debate whether its continued hegemony is serving the world at all well in an open access environment.

Beasley is currently Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian at the University of Alberta.  He formerly served as University Librarian at Concordia University, where he co-chaired the Open Access Working Group that successfully proposed a Resolution on Open Access to the Senate in 2010.
